Six pomegranate pips...

Did Persephone eat one of the six pips from Hades present when she arrived in the underworld in Autumn?
Could it be the reason why the light was so dim around 4.30pm, two days ago even here in Provence?
I confess this tale of Hades, Demeter and Persephone is one of my favourite  and at this time of the year I always reconsider this story.
I was watering the lentils I started growing some days ago and was thinking that Demeter was   not so depressed to have lost her beautiful daughter because these lentil seeds  of mine looked so full of generous life and promise. They grew  easily this time .
I do hope that real crops around the world will thrive like my symbolic lentils in spite of all the weather heavy disturbances which take place almost everywthere, even here where we have amazing rain episodes ... with rather appealing names like "épisodes Méditerranéens'  or "épisodes Cévennols....including dreadfull coastal floodings  on the  South West and South East coasts and life loss each time.
If only Demeter could stop beeing depressed this end of year, and the planet go safer for drinking water, food, peace?
If only the Migrants on earth and seas could find a safe shelter with fraternal mutual help around this planet?
I cannot think of any musical help to soften what I feel this end of 2019 year.
Could  it be a prayer to all the gods of this world and Ancient Underworld to help us down here?

Could  it be the cry of the singers I discovered during "Les Rencontre d'Averroès 2019 "the nignt of the Joubran Concert 'The Long March'?

Karine Deshayes: famous aria from La Reine de Saba CHarles Gounod

Victoires de la Musique Classique: for the second time, she won this prestigious award.

La Reine de Saba, Charles Gounod Opera de Marseille 27-X-19

La Reine de Saba

A concert version  for  this Gounod's opera inspired by Gerard de Nerval oriental poem  was given at Marseille Opera house on sunday afternoon Oct 27th.
It was a complete discovery which I shared with the title role Karine Deshayes  who sang this rather heroïc  role for the first time.
Indeed it was worth being in the live audience last sunday afternoon because Karine Deshayes in a bright orange -red long dress pleated  in a  greek ancient style,  gave a stunning rendition of this role.
She had imperial looks and the thousands colours of her voice with that glorious flamboyant centre and her amazing tops (very sopranistic) added tremendous charm and authority to this exotic queen who conquered Soliman's heart,  plus in this libretto,  the architect's heart during very secret meetings.
The  loud music from the brass instruments could be enjoyable for some time but I could not say it charmed me the whole afternoon. I became very sensitive to the text which sounded very clumsy at times especially when the three villains were plotting against their boss, the architect Adoniram sung by a tenor we all know here   JP Furlan.

I also noticed the chorus (excellent that day)  repeated   'soliman is arriving and sitting soon' which were really laughable but these aukwards parts were saved by amazing dramatic  rare  moments (I must say I found them 'too' rare  and had to wait for the last act to really feel drama and true emotions from the singers).
Because of the loud heroïc turn of the whole opera all the singers had musical arias  sung 'forte' which were rather fatal for the tenor and almost ruined his best aria "Faiblesse de la race humaine" (here sung by Rolando Villazon I admired so much when he began singing in France and Germany).  The tenor JP Furlan  did a courageaous job until his death, at the last act,  where he  (at last)  had a soft tune shared with his  lover Balkis.
Even Soleman - N.Courjal revealed his wonderful  bass tones in the second part of the opera after intermission.
Orchestra and chorus were efficient and excellent for that type of Grand opera. I had a very enjoyable moment at the violin solo I would really like to follow again and again. It would have been a cultural plus to have this rare opera on display on radio or another media. France Musique does not broadcast as much as it used to.
Really  the best singer from beginning to end was Balkis-Karine Deshayes, the famous Queen of Sheba !
It seemed this rather uneasy musical score and  that not so good libretto were fitting her voice for this role: she was a magnificient Queen challenging Soliman she was supposed to marry and was very touching as Adoniram's secret lover.  She  reached the peak of drama and emotion at the last act when the musical score softened with melodic tones rather than epic ones. The conspiracy of the villains  ( Adoniram's workers) seemed rather ridiculous but  the drama  got  more intense  when Adoniram  got stabbed by  the workers jalous of their master Adoniram ( right from the opening scene).
When Karine Deshayes sang, almost in a whisper,  'Adoniram n'est plus', suddenly came to my mind 'Hyppolite n'est plus' from Rameau's Hyppolite et Aricie' it was so similar in a way!
Then this iconic queen let her sorrow flow in an amazing  complaint which was an apology of her lover and his prestigious skills.  An acrobatic high musical phrase was at times soft then loud and fierce; the word 'divin' was so high pitched that I was shivering with passion for the dramatic mezzo soprano who at the  very last seven minutes of this long concert version could master her own voice and emotions so brilliantly...  Yes, Karine Dehayes alone on the stage and in front of orchestra and massive chorus was divine !
The applause were endless  for this generous singer who reminds me of Rita Gorr for the flamboyance of her voice and Régine Crespin for the agility and wonderful tops in each role she sings!  She embodied Charlotte, Balkis, Donna Elvira, Rosina, Carmen,  la Cenerentola, Adalgisa, Urbain, Elena, La Belle Hélène, La muse and  Nicklausse, Alceste, Marguerite, Romeo, Semiramide... and I am sure I have some blanks because her musical skills are magical! she is  the best living mezzo soprano for me, and a wonderful person who is caring for her fans sharing enthusiasum for her roles and generosity  with her fans. "Coupettes" (glasses of champagne called ''flutes' as well !) ) are what she shares with us when it is possible !
She will sing at  Rossini Festival Pesaro August 2020: I really want to make the journey for Rossini sung by Karine in Rossini's country! that will be perhaps be one of my last opera outings!
Tribute to the great Régine Crespin who gave a masterclass to Karine Deshayes:

Chorégies d'Orange (II) Tuesday August 6h 2019

For sure it was a fantastic musical and dramatic night full of surprises and unexpected gimmicks, really unexpected ?  Not quite!
All I have to recall  is the Haneke Don Giovanni I saw at Bastille , then the 2008 one in Salzburg where Leporello-Erwin Schrott had a  tramp look and charmed Elvira -Dorothea Roschmann in a bus stop... and part of the action took place in a city -garden where some seringes  could be seen in rubbish stacks. I was a bit shocked then very amused  and in  the end under the charm of this very sick Don Giovanni-Christopher Maltman.
The rule, somehow, is following this pattern:
Directors have  a decisive role these days and I suppose get a fair amount of the budget given for the opera. Their duty  is  to reshape the libretto to a new modern concept which will give the characters a  modernised mental attitude while words and music  do not change (most of the time).
So it is the great laundry and dusting of  the libretto to actualize the dramatic action and the mental state of the characters to the tastes of the 21st century.   And the predominant tastes these days are violence and sex  so, bingo ! Don Giovanni XVIIIth century  character is already a modern pervert violent with women and already a sex addict, ready to rape Donna Anna  and become a killer when discovered. This is already in the libretto but not explicit so now is the explicit side of it in this new staging.
Don Giovanni is a rapist ready to shoot his opponent in cold blood. Guns ( three on stage quite often) are always at hand in this version. Leporello is also a criminal and the driver of the yellow cab (like a New York taxi) which is Don Giovanni 's car opposed to a black Limousine where Donna Anna's father arrives on stage,  gun  in hand, aimed at Don Giovanni and shoots him  dead as he is shot  dead by the hero at the same time in a real mafioso style! Don Giovanni's body will remain on stage but  will also be reborn of his ashes!( the hardest part of the staging really)
What is rather hilarious in this opening scene is the lift which is projected on the Roman Wall almost like a street art design, where Don Giovanni is seen, going up to Donna Anna's bedroom window ... then the skreiching of the cab tyres arriving and departing ... and the mafia looks on both sides...So right at the beginning we know we are in a violent environment which is to be emphasized at the Fête ... the drinks and food being replaced by  sex in rather lascivious positions... necessary to the drama all that or just to be sure the audience, perhaps a younger audience would be coming  The "bouffon" style of it all saved the show !
It did not hurt me  much: I found it so extreme that it had a comic effect on me and Erwin Schrott on his first appearance, in dark grey shirt and trousers   had such an easy natural way to play  'truant' a rather vulgar one too with funny attitudes and Spanish footsteps, wincing at us (I was sitting at the second row on the very end of the row and could see all the gestures and intentions, it was amazing, . He made the show that night, in all positions and circumstances ! He was brilliantly vulgar and annoying with smashing singing and presence. His singing was fine considering he acted every bit of his role with so much brio! I remember as I was  thinking about his Leporello I witnessed in Salzburg, asking myself" was he really singing ?" This time sitting so near the stage I know he is a real  singing actor!!!
The Roman Wall was a kind of reference almost in each scene and I quite liked  watching the projections, like the transformation of the top into an 18th century mansion when necessary,   then during the Catalogue Aria there were messages of killed and abused women stuck on the Wall with red blood stains, then,  written on the wall,  Mozart 's  and Don Giovanni 's dates of birth and death appeared almost like tags !
The drawback of being so near the stage was a lack of perspective of the entire Wall with colours changing and also lines moving according to what was played by the musicians as the orchestra was also so fine and the real Mozart's voice. I must have missed many details that night!   (I had the feeling that when the orchestra goes into the famous B minor the Wall was sort of trembling with lines like waves because the music takes us in another world... the Requiem world, the underworld of the icy stone handshake awaiting Don Giovanni,)
There was a juxtaposition of I8th centary  details in costumes and settings and modern ones.
I do not try to understand  it  as I have no chance to see this opera twice, no public broadcast on  French Television this year which is rather surprising as Orange has been  the popular Summer event of the operatic French world (perhaps international world ?)  for years on NATIONAL CHANNELS.  There must be a severe lack of money in Culture and National TV channels. But we all know all is going private in France these days so Les Choregies will be under a  complete private board I suppose very soon.. I could be wrong because I am not interested in what is going on these days,  it is beyond my understanding).
The Commander arrived again in his black limousine  as a remake of the first scene and the horse-drawn carriage   also appeared  with the rebirth of  Don Giovanni (which had been lying on the stage for half the opera length; all that is rather confusing but may be the whole opera is a flash -back,  for Davide Livermore) . Shooting on both sides occured again and then the18th century elements  disappeared and the tremendous Commander's shout " Don Giovanni...." filled the space with a frightening depth ( the Russian bass Alexeï Tikhomirov is huge so is his voice ) and the end follows Da Ponte with the new staging bits! Leporello re - embarks in his  yellow cab with the two couples except for  Donna Elvira  who walks  up the stairs through the main Wall gate in  mourning  being  the only one who  cares for monstruous Don Giovanni and going to a "nunnary"after this drama.
Karine Deshayes is the central woman character in this version, she is the symbol of all the women fooled by her libertine husband. She acted with sincere emotions throughout the opera her arias were perfect with musicality and dramatic contrasts.
During the imbroglio scene in act 2 Don Giovanni  banded her eyes to show she is fooled by both Don Giovanni and Leporello. She played this part with genuine credibility," whirling  like a puppet ! Then in scene 8 when Leporello is arrested by Ottavio Anna Zerlina and Masetto,  her repeated 'Pieta' shows her real love which is also expressed in her last aria, with the short "a cappella" :
.."..aperto veggio il baratro mortal.... " very moving, then music again for the very sad " Misera Elvira"
The audience 's clapping  at the end  of this aria showed how much her acting and singing were appreciated !
If I try to express my admiration for all the singers from compromario roles to the seven main ones that will be my conclusion:  Admiration for all of them ! I was expecting the main arias and was not  disappointed because under the starry  very warm night in such an amazing natural setting with no wind it was a real treat to hear all these fine voices even the new ones I discovered, like the sweet looking Italian soprano, Mariangela Sicilia-Anna, or the beautiful Zerlina-Annalisa Stroppa, and her huge Masetto-Igor Bakan! These young voices were enchanting and got tremendous applause! Of course Mozart knew how  to catch the listener's heart:  When Stanislas de Barbeyrac -Don Ottavio carried his white chair around the pit wall  and sat in front of the pit facing the dark huge audience I was in another world at the first notes !  His " Il mio tesoro" was soft ' legere 'and touching. I saw him in Marseille right at his beginning and now he is starring on international scenes!  I could say the same about Adrian Sampetrean-Leporello, sometimes looking and sounding like Erwin Schrott's twin brother !
Frédéric Chasslin did a fine job in the pit with the opera de Lyon Orchestra considering all the extra noises to deal with Mozart rhythm during this opus: shots, tyres  making incredible sharp annoying high pitched sounds, and shouts of cruaulty during the ultra violent Masetto's bashing (was it necessary?)... it is not easy to play Mozart in a XXIcentury setting in front of Augustus Statue ....
But all considered it was amazingly funny  "giocoso' and tremendously moving   'tragico'
Musicians and singers did a fine job. After all this Da ponte libretto is "bouffone" and tragic,  why not sex and violence in a 'bouffon' way acted by such a great actor as Erwin Schrott  a mixture of Latin lover and mafioso in this production  but also tragic libertine in the very end! Leporello is a coward and can feel the tragic end of his master when hearing the Commander's voice. After Elvira 's great cry in spite of all the new effects of the staging Don Juan has to face hell 'inferno'  with a definite shot. We were  back to the Requiem and it was grand under the stars after all these contrasted  musical moments.
This time being almost 'historical' in such a place and not knowing if there will be aother smashing vocal selection of artists for Mozart like this one, plus  me  not getting around  too much  next Summer,  may be,  I asked my dearest mezzo Karine Dehayes for a selfie! Her generosisty is amazing  ! She took me back to the Roman tiers, she chose the spot and took the photo :
Mille baci sweetest Karine!
This could well be the END !!

Applause for Mozart and the entire cast !

The Discreet Diva's birthday party yesterday 23rd!

(photo  from Maria Stuarda , who has an excellent site on Facebook including admiration for Anja and passion for culture and Human Rights , reference to my post here too)
https://singerforallseasons.blogspot.com/2018/01/anja-harteros-mesmerising-and-dazzling.html

I was late publishing this post on time... sorry...

Yes,  she was born on the 23rd of July fom a Greek-German family and educated in Cologne where she still lives, I think.
Munich has been her operatic home for years and alongside with Jonas Kaufman they have given incredible musical happinesse to their audience at the Bayerische Staatsoper where it is so hard to get tickets without knowing some fans (which I was lucky to do so in recent past).
What I feel most on stage every time I listen to her is her dramatic and now tragic presence which refers to me to her Greek side. She is definitely a singing greek goddess  and  actress as much as Calas was. She has never pretended to the title of Diva, never behaved like one,  gave no photoshop sessions,   hardly any long interviews divulging her intimate life ! all she gives is her art of acting and singing and her passion for her  roles.
Lately without telling on this most neglected blog,  I saw her Tosca for the 3rd time at Bastille  opera house again, the night before I flew to China where I stayed for nearly a month.
That night she was sharing the stage for one opening night with Vittorio Grigolo. I can say Tosca the Diva is now hers. Her elegant natural look on stage matches the command of her voice. She is an absolute wonder in this role. They were both very seductive and credible ! Once again I had an immense pleasure listening to her  and watching her ! These days  I have somehow neglected to take photos because I only care for the performance in the house and my emotions, which I have been trying  to  put into words, so roughly.
I used to try seeing her at the stagedoor each time I travelled to see her. Now I only rejoice at her appearances from my various seats! She is such an accurate musician with amazing high floating notes, they still exist and her low notes are easier now but she is not trying to sound more dramatic like some do with the low part of the voice enlarged  which alters the sharpness of the top notes and somehow sounds artificial. She has no need to do so her long breath technique and floating tops gives her the chance to be heard on top of an entire orchestra and choir ! (as in Verdi's Requiem at la  Scala when I heard that kind of miracle for the first time !)
Last Summer I discovered the amazing German Temple of Bayreuth because she was singing Elsa again alongside Piort Beczala, her Lohengrin. I was on another planet for the entire night ! My Munich friend had got the ticket for me, the most expensive one in my all opera-goer's life ! I could not help thinking about the young girl sitting at the god's in Marseille opera house in 1948 or19'49, watching the  opera German troupe singing Lohengrin in German  ! All I remember is the apparition of the white papier mâché swan which was pulled on rails (from the gods I could see them)  and suddenly the machinery got stuck, the swan and the "Prince "inside the swan could not move forward ...In my child's imagination all that was like a fairy -tale!!! This incident was often quoted at home when my parents and I discussed opera...
So in the Summer 2018 I had this faboulous treat to see her Elsa in top conditions but did not care for photos of hers at all, I was so moved to see the nature all around this kind of barn and the pageantry before the opening!
But my best memories of hers refer to the concert in Austria in 2016!
So Happy Birthday Anja Harteros ! May I see you in Paris once a year at least ! Keep well and stay as you are : dedicated to the Art of singing and caring for your audience so much in your discreet ways!
I have a dream:
One day, Anja the Greek goddess will sing Constantin Cavafis 'poems put to music ... If I could set poems to music I would write  music for Ithaque, just for her voice and incredible presence on stage...

Charlotte or Werther ? Toulouse, Capitole , June 28th.

On Thursday evening the capitole Square was empty on the wide sunny side because of the heatwave (44C even at 7pm), only the cafés side, in a narrow shade, had some customers.
I crossed the square to reach the Capitole opera house and get a picture as I made the journey precisely for Werther.
From a distance I could see the  Caspar David Friedrich's painting, "The wanderer above a sea of clouds"  on the billboard, then closely, I was surprised to notice there was no mention of the cast except for the conductor and the director.

As I was standing in scorching sunshine I realised I made the journey for the singers and did not care much for the director (Nicolas Joël) or the conductor (J-F Verdier) who was a discovery for me.
I tried to find out why there was no cast printed on  the well-known reproduction. Till then, I have not found any explanation.
Was it too expensive to print the names of  Karine Deshayes as Charlotte,  or Jean-Françoic Borras as Werther, also the rest of the cast?
It would have been nice to see both Karine and J-F Borras together on the picture, I have the feeling they will be side by side soon on a prestigious stage in Europe with Massenet and Werther and also with this amazing conductor.   So far, I have listened to a fair amount of Werthers  in my opera-goer 's life but that evening, I was astonished by this rendition which never lingered on the dramatic effects and always kept the biting side of the drama with the turmoils of the souls in restraint : that   gave the instrument solos tremendous strength and emotion. The conductor had a swift command on the rhythm which made the orchestra sound more modern and yet immensely contrasted and romantic.
That was so true during the last act which can be extremely off-putting if the pathos effects of Werther 's rather slow death are lingering. Both Karine Dehayes and Jean -François Borras made it sound  heartbreaking.

The house was not full but very intense and under the power of these voices trained to French melody and singing, matching so well during these difficult last scenes.
I discovered how authentic, young and straigthforward was  Werther embodied by J-F Borras. I liked the way he threw Ossian's book away and ran out !
As for Karine Deshayes, Charlotte is now hers! she has gorgeous top as clear as a soprano and delicate  low notes which move me to tears in this role. She got the first clapping of the evening at the end of 'va laisse coulez mes larmes' which made me cry actually . I think she was having sobs in her voice too.
At the curtain fall when they  both appeared  and the cheering was tremendous!

I really thought that night that Charlotte was certainly my first choice then on second thoughts I realised that this  young tenor was the real Werther with fantastic tops and  so much strength !
How could I have a preference? that night that couple was at the top of their art! The conductor and orchestra made a definite jump into something more modern and intense I would like to hear again!
Then Toulouse came in my mind  and in my heart as always with memories of the Nougaro's family : father and son, both musicians and singers!
Although it was the beginning of the heat wave which is still on in South of France I managed to stroll along this old and exquisite city and found some cool spots not far from the Capitole !

Notre -Dame de Paris, four years ago.

https://www.arte.tv/fr/videos/051471-000-A/le-requiem-de-berlioz-interprete-dans-la-cathedrale-notre-dame-de-paris/
Today it is a dramatic issue after the dreadful fire. Hopefully, the vessel is saved  because of   the huge courage and skill from the special Paris Firemen Brigade.
We must keeep in mind Notre-Dame de Paris has always been a shelter for Les Misérables, well-known too by Victor Hugo.
Now the suburb is highly trendy and it costs a lot to spend some time next to the center of France as all distances for our national roads start at Notre-Dame.
Let's not forget we are in a difficult social period and that there are  contemporary Miserables who protest and somehow say loudly enough what some others  experience in their daily life without saying.

Leo Ferré :La mémoire et la Mer.

He is the greatest for music and poetry.
It seems to me, according to my memory of great poems put to music, that this one is the most moving of all he wrote.
The more I follow his singing the more I find jewels in the words and feelings to be completely knocked off.
Today sea and sky are so blue ... almost impossible to stare at.
And yet so many around these shores will face their fate.
