Liederabend... mélodies... poèmes en musique, Berg, Brahms, Wolf and Anja Harteros.

 This is my next destination: Frau Harteros 's recital in Milan.
It  only takes nine hours by IDBUS, cheaper than train and  plane, above all less tiring, but will it be?

All I have to do is pack  my rucksack, get my Ipad ready for this long trip so I can read and listen to the poems I will hear sung on Sunday evening, at la Scala.

Before Sunday there will be Saturday at the Expo! 

I have five countries on my list: Chili, Austria, China, Italy and Spain. Then there are thematic explorations that speak to my mind and heart because Food quality and quantity is the big  issue on our planet in this new century highly polluted by technologies of all sorts which endanger life of all species of this marvelous planet.That is the paradoxical situation we all live in.
The last  but not least  threat  for all of us comes from religious and economical conflicts which make population flee to better lands. But death and violence seem to be the answer or else if they succeed  to reach Europe, to be summoned to camps then directed back to their homeland.
This nightmare can be witnessed every day on tv.
Each time I feel so furious and ashamed to belong to a country which so far has had no humanitarian answer  to propose to other EC countries.
Italy faces alone the rescue of these emigrants.
At Calais, bashing is the only answer to prevent them from going to GB. What a  shameful situation for us really...
I am hoping to find some kind of generosity in this international display at the Milan Expo, but I have an idea it is also the showcase for Food leaders, just by looking at the Expo map.

"Après un rêve " Karine Deshayes and l'Ensemble Contraste:new Cd (updated)

The atmosphere  of this new  Cd, (music and melodies) "Après un rêve" (Cd title from GabrielFauré 's melodie)  is peaceful, nostalgic and poetic in these days of violence almost everywhere.
It is like taking a deep breathing from another planet !  Karine Deshayes's warm voice, even soothing (in an unknown lullaby written by a musician also pretty unkown, Benjamin Godard, but really catching), takes us away  with the romantic seduction of the three instruments, special mention to the cello so well matched with Karine's voice, I think!

This morning, France Musique in the programme "En pistes", presented this new Cd .
An opportunity to listen to two melodies, including the lulluby, and Massenet's Elegie played by the three musicians.

These days, my topics  simply go from one cherished soprano to one cherished mezzo soprano!
I could have said something about a cherished baritone  too, but somehow I do not know what to think because he cancelled all his appearances and I fear I will not be able to see him, Ludovic Tézier, alongside Karine Deshayes on June the 9th at Salle Gaveau He is such a dear singer too... so let's hope for the best for him!
To complete the  release of "Après un rêve",  on Sunday the 24th  is another programme on France Musique (it was before 'un Mardi Idéal) where Karine Deshayes will participate in this talk show and her new Cd will be discussed (and heard.)

Anja Harteros says what she feels about Vier letzte Lieder on BR Klassik:

At the moment I am listening to BR-Klassik with an only desire:  To listen to Anja Harteros 's interpretations as much as possible.
When I printed her name in the search box on BR-Klassik page,  I had 23 answers and wonderful podcats to explore.  I have to use Google translate because I have no knowledge of German. The only words I know come from listening carefully to lieder. I am getting more familiar now with Strauss's repertoire Anja Harteros has been singing for a considerable number of years now.

This morning, I came across seven minutes of bliss with her voice, speaking voice,  telling us what she feels about the music and the poems she sings with vivid humanity and growing musicianship. 
She speaks with enthusiasm and passion in her voice!
For her it is like a Requiem whenever she comes to sing them, comparing the degree of respect and humility there is among conductors, orchestras and herself,  to the same atmosphere for  Verdi's Requiem.
The translation did not seem to suffer too much, and I have to make this special page as a key page when I feel like listening to her singing and talking, owing to BR-Klassik.

Die "Vier letzten Lieder" von Richard Strauss gelten als dessen künstlerisches Vermächtnis. Ursprünglich waren sie von Strauss gar nicht als Zyklus gedacht und wurden nicht in der Reihenfolge komponiert, in der sie heute aufgeführt werden. Die Uraufführung konnte der Komponist nicht mehr miterleben. Florian Heurich sprach mit der Sopranistin Anja Harteros über die "Vier letzten Lieder".

Das starke Stück: Richard Strauss - Vier letzte Lieder

Die Weisheit des Alters und die Abgeklärtheit eines in sich ruhenden Menschen sprechen aus den Vier letzten Liedern. Aber auch Abschiedsstimmung und das Bewusstsein, dass alles auf dieser Welt endlich ist. Nach Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs lebt Richard Strauss für mehrere Jahre in der Schweiz. Hier entstehen seine letzten Lieder. Sein Sohn Franz habe ihm geraten, sich mit diesen Kompositionen über die schwierigen Lebensumstände der Nachkriegszeit hinwegzuhelfen, so heißt es.

Rückschau auf den Lebensweg

Als persönliches Bekenntnis versteht der mittlerweile über 80-Jährige Strauss ein Gedicht von Joseph von Eichendorf: Im Abendrot. Ein altes Paar geht in Harmonie und innerem Frieden dem Tod entgegen. Wenn er die Verse sogar in sein Tagebuch notiert, dann hält er Rückschau auf seinen Lebensweg an der Seite seiner Frau Pauline. Im Abendrot beschließt die Vier letzten Lieder und ist doch das erste, das er komponiert hat, und von dem die anderen drei Stücke auf Gedichte von Hermann Hesse ausgehen.

Der Vorahnung des Todes nimmt das durch Flötentriller geschilderte Zwitschern zweier Lerchen jegliche Schwere und Düsternis. Das Lied und damit der ganze Zyklus klingen zwar in melancholischer aber doch in versöhnlicher Stimmung aus. Die Musik weitet sich ins Transzendente. Todesahnung und Jenseitshoffnung sind in diesen Klängen vereint. Die Lyrik Hermann Hesses lernt Strauss erst nach dem Eichendorf-Gedicht kennen. Bei Hesse findet er einen Weg hin zu überzeitlichen, humanistischen, ein Menschenleben überdauernden Werten manifestiert.

"Der Anfang von Frühling, „In dämmrigen Grüften träumte ich lang“ , das ist ja der Text... Also es fängt im Grunde schon mit diesem winterlichen, melancholischen, etwas trübe gestimmten Klang an. Auch aus der Tiefe, so aus dem Nichts heraus. Und es schwingt sich dann eben in diese Euphorie und dieses Enthusiastische."

Kreisläufe der Natur

Hermann Hesse: Drei der "Vier letzten Lieder" sind nach seinen Gedichten entstanden.

Auf die Frühlingseuphorie in der neu aufkeimenden Natur folgt jedoch sofort die Herbststimmung in einem ersterbenden Garten. Quasi im Zeitraffer werden in den Vier letzten Liedern die Kreisläufe der Natur durchmessen: Jahreszeiten, Tageszeiten, ein Menschenleben. Im dritten Lied Beim Schlafengehen schwingt sich die Gesangsstimme zu einem feierlichen Hymnus auf den Schlaf des Todes und die dadurch erreichte Freiheit der Seele auf.

"Das Schöne bei den Vier letzten Liedern ist, dass sie ein bisschen wie das Requiem sind. Mit den Dirigenten, mit denen man das macht, und auch bei den Musikern im Orchester spürt man, dass die das so ernst nehmen, weil es sozusagen das letzte ist, was wir von dem großen Meister, dem Komponisten mitbekommen haben. Da ist man fern ab von jeder Kritik eigentlich, sondern man ist im Grunde dankbar, dass wir das machen dürfen; dass der uns das noch geschenkt hat, das Werk. Das spür ich immer sehr deutlich, wenn ich das Requiem von Verdi singe, oder auch bei den Vier letzten Liedern von Strauss. Da ist eine gewisse Ernsthaftigkeit und eine gewisse Demut bei allen Mitwirkenden zu spüren."

Anja Harteros : Singer of the year.

Even for this International Award of 'Singer of the Year', I have not found one article about it with photos of the artist, either in Forum Opera,  Resmusica or Altamusica... or in the press articles I scanned either...
This artist is almost tip-toeing through celebrity and wonderful renditions... 

I have decided to imagine my own celebration, modestly,  as my photographer's gifts are rather poor, but at least I was in the audience for Aïda, and presented this great singer with a tiny bunch I selected for her the previous evening at Campo di Fiori.  It was rather small because I did not want it to be  embarassing, just a token of my respect and admiration for all she does in the music realm, for us.
 She agreed to have some photos taken with us after this long concert version where she gave all her heart and art to us!
Here is a crop I did in a group taken by the Munich friends after Aïda on Feb the 27th.

Then I have decided to show more of the Lohengrin I attended in Berlin, and there is also a photo sent by my friend in Munich.`
In fact she did not travel to London for this Award because she had the last Lohengrin performance to do in Berlin and then very soon after she was back in Munich for two Forza del Destino. So she was rather busy. I read she sent a thank letter but I never managed to find it on the web either ...
This is definitely  the illustration  of  the "DD"  I talked before here, and here for Discreet Diva !
Here she is with her Lohengrin fellow singers at the bows at the Deutsch Oper: it could well be the last rendition .
 It is a lively picture taken by my Munich friend. She is waving to the conductor Donald Runnicles who was ever so efficient in this splendid opera. Her blonde wig is so strange!
