At this time of the year I have to set off to Haute-Provence. Like last year I will walk the miles back to Forcalquier and hum along while gazing around. This autumn which is endlessly warm and sunny the harvest is rich in this part of the world. We did not suffer from draught, it rained a lot in June. My pomegranate bush is now a tree, a bit dishevelled, towering the unruly Lady Banks climber. They seem to have a competition. I go back to my childhood at this period. Mum would have been surprised and happy to see this tree and its crop. The reddish pomegranates are juicy and generous. There was the Italian grocer's down the Rue Breteuil in Marseilles who had a nice display of seasonal fruit, and Mum always offered me a pomegranate at this time of the year. Now I think it was for her a happy memory of her childhood too, when her father was growing an enchanted garden at 'La Corniche Fleurie' in Nice... there must have been a pomegranate tree there and peaceful sunny days. But I do not know. How could I know now ? What I know is the meaning of food and presents, when I was a child in 45, 46, 47, and the value of this Autumn pomegranate from my Mum is a source of endless joy, even when death crossed the path.
Now, I can eat it and dream.
Nothing to do with your post, I know, but I found this link and, knowing how much you like Faust, thought you might enjoy it!

Dear Eyes, I am late answering I'm afraid. Yes I watched this laughable Faust on (Tv) FR3 as it was broadcast nation wide. I never imagined I could laugh at Faust in 2011... If you have time just try to see the massage session... Roberto is in a peculiar position... his singing and acting are less and less convincing for me, and I am not a fan of his top notes lately... so... thanks for this link.. Opera Bastille spent tremendous tax- money on this... was it necessary...? I went to Toulon for a less mediatic Faust on the 13th and it was a real delight. I'll try to say something but these days I find it hard to blog... sorry! Thanks a lot!
ReplyDeleteNo pressure to blog, Yvette - we just enjoy what you say when you say it !
ReplyDeleteGlad your latest Faust was enjoyable.
and now back to pomegranat, i truly love the picture :-). Do you just open the fruit and eat it away like an orange?
ReplyDeleteHello dear Thadieu, I loved your last post on the bareer of language in the melodies.. you are so right.
ReplyDeleteYes, I peel the pomegranates empty all the juicy grains in a bowl, and eat them just like that with a rea spoon, but I spit out the core, a sort of light wood(?) kernel I chew but do not swallow. When I was a kid because it was so beautiful inside I just could not decide to eat it! But now, I love the juice. It seems it' s good for you! Have a nice week-end, and thanks for all the musical Mahler links. I will listen!
@eyesometric, your nice words help..I'm stuck because it is quite hard sometimes trying to 'transform' in words and without real musical language what the ear and eye (yes...) caught and appreciated during a performing event like opera...so... when I visit your shores as Smorgy nicely says I am amazed by the rich musical pannel BBC3 offers! Thanks for all your links and comments. Have a restful week-end!
