What is wonderful is the number of uploads about Regine on Youtube, which means anytime I am here on the web I explore the latest uploads about her and compare with what I know and what I have on my shelf. I was too busy to check France Musique to see if they celebrated the 4th of July and had a thought, a musical one, for this enchanteress, perhaps a true inspired human being, belonging to the happy few the gifted ones in touch with the Muses and Apollo.
Karine Deshayes told me she followed one of Regine Crespin's masterclasses, and Regine gave her a pair of her stage ear -rings as a lucky charm for her career. Karine showed them to me when she was at Marseille Opera House for Isoletta in La Straniera, (She wore them at the première).
There is a kind of filiation from one artist to another, one human being to another and the audience, sharing these human bonds.
She came back to Marseilles in 71 to sing Marschallin, a role she created right at the beginning of her career (Nov 1953 in French; she had learnt the role with Lotte Lehmann, who was chosen by Richard Strauss to create the role) in this very Opera House she says she has always liked. She was born here too and never lost the touch of the Southern accent, educated though, but still in her way of talking!
There are some pieces that belong exclusively to her and I cannot simply bare to listen sung by others... like Berlioz, Satie, Poulenc melodies. Although I do not recall having seen her live, but my parents said I had when we came back after the war and she was beginning her carreer in Marseilles Opera House.. 1950... I wish I could have some flash back...
I could have attended this 1971 Die Rosenkavalier, but I was completely in my work, coming back from England and starting to teach, very busy and listening to my radio... D was working hard too, writing a thesis, the first one ... in complete silence, while I was reading and listening in another corner, isolated, to keep peace and quiet. Now I can do as much noise as I want and explore Youtube to find documents about Regine, like this one which is very precious, her teaching, her second life...
(many thanks to the uploader Marie Dijon)
As it happens, for me, she is always here.
