Perhaps because I am a 'senior' citizen I feel each loss in the operatic world a bit stronger each time. And it seems that the ones I have liked since my teens tend to leave us, which is non surprising, but ever so sad to go through, because their voices are linked to episodes of my life and my growing tastes in my world of passion for voices.
I can say I got hooked on the melody because of Hughes Cuénod soft and precise voice, always so clear and thrilling. Being over 100 years old it seemed he would have been eternal.
Indeed all singers hopefully because of the musical industry and our passionate memory will be eternal. I had illustrated my love for his voice already in a past post.
I will do it again in respect for his marvellous long life spent in music and singing for us.

An extraordinary artist - I had the privilege of seeing him twice at Glyndebourne. Once as one of the village layabouts in Werther and then as the most delicious sex-starved old nymph in a remarkable production of La Calisto with Janet Baker, James Bowman and Ileana Cotrubaş. I still treasure my recording of that work.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for posting the love selection - he did indeed seem eternal and thank god we have him on record.
Your comments make me think of a tapestry which is being woven, with threads on each side. Yours are golden, so rich with passion and marvellous artistic beauties. I have never seen these dear singers, I have only followed them through records and radio broadcasts. I am still a great radio listener but treat myself to some outings now!. I used to spend summers in Lewes, busy with family but never went to Glyndebourne, just round
ReplyDeletethe corner...What I wonder is that I do not see young tenors with such abilities. So this loss is really painful. Thank you so much for your comments, my dear friend Willym!
