Simon Bcccanegra, Verdi/Steinberg Theâtre des Champs Elysées 12 III 17

At the TCE, it was a  unique concert version which counts more than a staged one!
It was the second performance for the cast,   with the Monte- Carlo chorus and orchestra and their conductor P. Steinberg  after the first run precisely at Monte Carlo. That second run was excellent and what a treat to be able to concentrate on music and words with no other escape...
What I like in this Verdi's opera is the musicality of Amelia's arias, where it is possible to hear the ripples of the sea. These scores convey more poetry than other Verdi's work. What I also appreciate is Simon Boccanegra's aging under the  effect of the poison. That night at the TCE all the singers could emphasize words and meaning to express feelings. The drama was completely sung and beautifully sung for all.
I made the trip to listen to Ludovic Tezier's Doge, in one of the greatest baritone  role he has now put at his repertoire for the first time.
It was a great successful attempt for him, and I could feel how far he has gone since I discovered him in Marseille in his young days at the CNIPAL! Now he is our Verdian baritone and has achieved celebrity in Vienna, Munich and all over the artistic planet!
Amelia- Sondra Radvanovsky conveyed emotion with Adorno-R. Vargas  or her father, Simon the Doge.
Fiesco-V.Kowaljow was stunning too. The vilain Paolo was also well played by A.Heyboer.
This opera is a continuous suspense: either on the political aspect or on the family one. What fascinates me each time, is the transformation of the three main characters into a real family, father discovering his daughter then grandfather finding his  granddaughter. Of course  Simon's death after the reconciliation of father in law and son in law is very moving. That night, these intricate feelings were expressed with great musicality and emotion by all.
