Amazing how I've grown accustomed to His voice!
I was listening and watching Tales of Hoffmann last night on Mezzo. Not really caring for the setting perhaps very clever, with lots of light- effects and reflections,and three kinds of "Liza Minelli in Cabaret" playing the same image of the poet's love! But I could not feel any soul and emotion in that Hoffmann, top notes were harsh without
vibration or glowing feelings in it. No way of dreaming about that sick poet like I did when I followed Rolando who really got into the mood of this mad poet drinking too much smoking as well and desparately seeking love, his voice and acting were intimate to a point that now it is difficult for me to accept another singer in this role! That tenor was bulky(not his fault),and had no seduction in his singing. He sang it with little expression, even through the Antonia act. Perhaps was he better in the cynical part of his 'game of pseudo love with Giulietta.
Is it really possible to talk in details about that december night at the ROH?
Rolando is a born actor who can sing. His singing alone is a wonder. His figure on stage whatever he interprets is a miracle. Hoffmann with what he does in his elegant singing is special,never seen and heard before. Yes, it is difficult to talk about it.(I was in company with a born musician who was charmed by his musicality).

ReplyDeleteJ'avais vu Rolando à Paris et son Hoffmann était stupéfiant dans la mise en scène contestable de R. Carsen;j'aurais adoré voir le spectacle du ROH car vocalement il était particulièrement impressionnant, nuançant chaque phrase avec une intelligence merveilleuse . Un seul espoir : que le ROH ait enregistré en vidéo, par Opus Arte, et sorte prochainement le DVD???????
Je suis bien déçue que Rolando ait dû annuler sa participation à la nouvelle production du MET car il s'était particulièrement bien entendu avec B. SHEER à Salzbourg pour le dernier Roméo et Juliette.

Et pourquoi les villazonistas n'enverraient-ils pas une pétition à la direction du ROH pour "obtenir" ce dvd ?Il est certain que le ROH l'a filmé ! alors??????pourquoi ne pas l'éditer?

En 2004 Rolando a eu un triomphe au ROH avec son premier Hoffmann: Rien n'a "transpiré" non plus!
ReplyDeleteJe crois que c'est une histoires de droits et de négociations où notre enthousiasme aura peu de poids. Business is business, et certainement il y aura quelque chose d'édité, à suivre...Merci Catherine et Térèse de me lire!
Yo veo dificil que se publique en DVD, ya que la misma producción está editada ya, la de Plácido Domingo. No digo que no se haga, sino que "normalmente" no se hace, pero de lo que no me cabe la menor duda es que más tarde o más temprano tendremos unos Contes de Rolando, si éste sigue siendo uno de sus papeles estelares.
ReplyDeleteTu as encore un autre argument, tu as raison Maria-Teresa, il faut aussi négocier cela ,ce Hoffmann-Domingo au catalogue! C'st certain qu'en ce moment Rolando sur la scène lyrique internationale est Hoffmann .Wait and See!
ReplyDeletej'espère aussi qu'il y aura un DVD des contes avec Rolando, quelle pitié que ce ne soit pas déjà fait. j'enrage !!! si par malchance Rolando ne récupérait pas toutes ses possibilités vocales, il n'y aurait aucune trace vidéo de ses merveilleuses prestations !!
