That was in 1964.
I was pretty young and enthusiastic about life in those days!
Looking around I tend to sing along that brilliant tune and lines Bob Dylan wrote and sang, precious lines ' Don't criticise what you can't understand'
Come mothers and fathers
Throughout the land
And don't criticize
What you can't understand
Your sons and your daughters
Are beyond your command
Your old road is
Rapidly agin'.
These days it is hard to understand that children and teen-agers are going to be searched at school-doorways, that police forces are required for football-matches and rock-concerts, that weapons are being used in all poor suburbs of all urban cities in the world, that banks collapsed and huge amounts of cash suddenly came from nowhere to help the managers who precisely gambled with the money of the poorer ones, who became much poorer, lost their homes and jobs, that we still thrive by exploiting Africa, that a migrant worker has a much more complicated life than ever, that the ideal of Equality is lost it seems, for ever.
Still I should be reassured that huge police forces are parked every day in centre Paris, but there are not enough Police to help the people in the suburbs...
After all The man in charge of this country France did say:
"QU'ON NE S'Y TROMPE PAS LA DELINQUANCE NE PROCEDE QUE TRES RAREMENT DE LA SOUFFRANCE SOCIALE" May the 28th.
This is a statement I will never accept, never, it is the exact opposite of what I believe and have experienced through my teaching life.
So Bob, it is not just a generation gap like in this great tune of yours! Now I think I have a right to criticise what I will never understand !
