When his long and thin arms opened up to describe in the air the fairly round circle of the tree suggesting its shade and volume I could see him getting ready to soar then fly, like his deep voice singing softly the attack on the "O' then amplifying it on the word 'ombra" till it resounded to conquer me better than a contralto, a mezzo or a tenor voice. All the assurance of a deep voice can illustrate this dedication to a plane tree .
I will try to cure mine by singing this tune,if that is the spell! Be reminded to sing at least two 'ombra mai fu' underneath the planetree, for its sake and probably yours. There was another pleasure coming from the environment,'selve amiche, and this time I followed his voice along this soothing but too short walk in the woods.
So this was only a musical tour of our friendly green space? There was more to come with 'Tristesse" and the blasting 'And the trumpet shall sound". His talented diction was a real suffering, whatwith Fauré's jaring tones, it all made me cry inside. His lovely , tall and thin pianist ( they really make a matching pair!) sounded fantastic here: Sad waltz rhythm which does not last long and these 'hélas' he sang with all his heart were overwhelming, leading to burial.
And then the long variation on 'immortality' in this amazing quote from The Messiah,
His voice was loud and fierce but what he did on this 'immortality' convinced me it might be the key to his first part of the recital avoiding to end on the desperate human fate. Here is the answer through belief. I had to breathe for him, as he was vocalising in a great way. Sure he practises that hyper long breath by swimming and diving!
The first part could not have ended on Fauré's Tristesse and mandoline, the full strength of his voice in this Saint-Trophime church was stunning.
That the weather was suited to the musical atmosphere of this first part with wind and rain was unexpected.
If I had waited to say hello after the recital I would have been tempted to whisper to my dear singer, because I now know his voice and ways and feel so friendly:
'ne rentre pas trop tard, surtout ne prends pas froid'...
