Looking backwards:
Salammbô, Ernest Reyer, Berlioz's friend, born in Marseilles,
I could not forget to celebrate this Met promotion, which is a fantastic turn over with youth and talent! Salammbô-Kate Aldrich at Marseilles operahouse! Sept 08.
The season opened on a rare opera from a Marseilles' composer,Ernest Reyer, for the celebration of the centennial anniversary of his death and the revival of his orientalist musical art in harmony with the Horizon 2013 as Marseilles is now officially capital of culture: the main theme being the brigde linking cultures from both sides of the Mediterranean Sea.
She is extremely good-looking and her mezzo voice is all I like! She has a beautiful low range and a full round strong medium with full resounding at the top. Both times I was delighted by her voice and acting. She was so sparkling in Salammbô, with a fantastic French diction!
I would not have hesitated to take her on the cast, knowing what she sounds and looks like on a stage opera! So she will be Carmen at the Met, with Jonas Kaufmann: Beautiful couple for the sound and sight of it, which is now important. I do not know Jonas Kaufmann's live voice; for Kate, I attended two of her creations: In sept 2008, she sang Salammbô, which is a difficult score, and this season, Octavian, with so much intense and ravishing colours.
Saw Ms Aldrich in Zelmira as you know and she is scheduled for the Cenerentola this summer in Pesaro. Would love to see her Carmen.
