News from Teatro Real.

The radio broadcast of André Chénier was interrupted last night because of loud protests from the audience: microphones were amplifying the sounds and the audience stopped the course of the opera. This is a healthy reaction, otherwise opera will lose what makes its real value: the voice without a microphone.
The broadcast was carried on with a CD of André Chénier casting Luciano Pavarotti.
The management explained the sound was amplified because of the broadcast.
After all Teatro Real is a normal size house, nothing like Bastille which is so treacherous for the voice. Rumor says the sound is amplified in Bastille.
I have experienced some bad spots, on the extreme sides of the orchestra, end of rows next to the walls, the sound just vanishes.
A very good point to Madrid opera fans, they do not like to be fooled!
Very good defense of what makes opera a different art form!
It must have been a confusing moment for the singers though, but this is a performing art, the audience cannot be zapped!
