Baudelaire's poem 'La vie antérieure" has found its music beyond the poet's words with the composer Henri Duparc.
Henri Duparc had composed most of his melodies before 1870, he was then twenty, and they were published much later,in 1911 because he was very concerned with perfection in his work. He inherited the German Lied tradition through Schubert and Schumann and he was admired by his master Cesar Franck. There are only seventeen melodies left from this gifted composer: he started having spells of nervous illness in 1885, and could not see, so very soon he had to stop writing music and led a poor life for almost fifty years. What is really extraordinary about this romantic musician is his poetic choice, certainly the finest poems of his time and now in French poetry.
José Van Dam recorded the seventeen melodies as a tribute to his teacher Frédéric Anspach.(1993,Piano, Macief Pikulski)
This is a baritone rendition of 'la vie antérieure' Rolando Villazon will sing the tenor transcription of this melody, next sunday at the TCE in Paris. I do not think Rolando Villazon has already sung this melody. I am looking forward...
